Individual vs Family Coverage

When to pick a dedicated individual policy and when a family floater wins.

Both plans cover hospitalization, but they're structured very differently. Picking the right one starts with knowing who you want to protect and how usage might play out.

Individual plan — pros

  • Dedicated sum insured for one person — never shared.
  • Underwriting and claims aren't affected by other members.
  • Easier to port or upgrade independently.

Family floater — pros

  • Single, lower combined premium — significantly cheaper for young families.
  • Shared sum insured is rarely exhausted by a single hospitalization.
  • Simpler administration — one policy, one renewal.

The hybrid approach most planners recommend

A floater for the immediate nuclear family + a separate individual senior-citizen policy for parents. This keeps the floater premium low while giving senior members appropriate coverage without being dragged down by Tier-3 sub-limits common in senior plans.
